UGANDA WILD LIFE SOCIETY JOB DISCRIPTION FOR THE POST OF PROJECT OFFICER
Introduction
UWS was established in 1999 with the Goal of promoting Wildlife conservation in Uganda through awareness raising, research and advocacy. UWS programme activities are implemented within a framework of a UWS Strategic Plan that emphasizes among others, strengthening UWS membership and membership services, improved programme delivery, partnerships and outreach and building a strong and viable Society.
The Society operates from its offices that are located in Kampala purposely to serve as a Secretariat, represent UWS, manage and monitor implementation of UWS activities and support members. The Secretariat receives policy guidance and supervision from the Executive Committee.
With support from the Netherlands Committee of IUCN and in partnership with other members of the Ecosystem Alliance in Uganda, UWS will over the next three and half years implement a field project aimed at empowering communities in Buliisa District for Sustainable Natural Resource Management. The project will seek to address natural resources practices and patterns that undermine the sustainability of the ecosystems as well people’s livelihoods in the short and long term. This situation results from poor farming/agricultural and fishing practices, restricted access and use of resources from within the neighbouring protected areas and some section of the lake, limited awareness of the need for and means to harness the natural resource potential, barriers to community participation in decisions making regarding developments in the locality, and weak or no incentives for compliance to natural resources. The situation is aggravated by development policies and regulations which do not respond to the situation, as well as poor information flow to inform and influence policy level planning.
The Project will address these drivers in Buliisa District through empowerment and capacity building of all stakeholders, as well as information dissemination, and support for institutional and systems building.
Reporting to the Executive Secretary, and working closely with other technical and administration staff of UWS under the overall guidance of the Society’s Executive Committee, the Project Officer is responsible for the overall implementation of the project and must make sure that the project’s medium and long term objectives are achieved.
The Project Officer will be based in Buliisa and have the following specific responsibilities:
- Be responsible for establishment and management of a project office in Buliisa, including oversight of project assets and supervision of project staff.
- Develop an overall strategy for implementation of the project, including:
- Development of strategies for promoting sustainable land management
- Development of programme and tools for capacity building of communities
- Identifying local partners that will serve as change agents and working with them to develop their roles and responsibilities In the project’
- Designing and implementing an awareness programme for all stakeholders
- Regularly monitoring indicators of performance
- Preparing quarterly, semi-annual and annual financial and technical reports
- Representing UWS in Buliisa and within the Ecosystem Alliance
10. Performing other duties as may from time to time be requested by the Executive Secretary of UWS.
Qualification required
- Excellent knowledge of natural resources – wildlife, trees, plants, soil, water and at higher level, ecosystems; and their sustainable use and management.
- Five years field based working experience on projects whose objective was improvement of livelihoods and ecosystem health.
- Knowledge of scientific and social research methods, Geographic information systems and Monitoring and Evaluation
- NGO management and operations
Academic qualification
At least a Masters Degree in resource management, conservation science
or similar fields.

The Project Field Assistant will be based in Buliisa and have the following specific responsibilities:
- Be responsible for establishment and management of the project research and other activities data base.
- Be responsible for project data analysis and reporting.
- Develop an overall strategy for communication of the project progress reports.
- Assisting the project officer in field data collection and other activities implementation.
- Assisting the project officer in development of tools/extension materials for capacity building of communities and other stakeholders.
- Assisting the project officer in preparation of quarterly work plans, activity, technical and financial reports.
- Assisting the project officer in maintaining and taking care of the project office and equipments.
- Performing other duties as may from time to time be requested by the Project Officer and or the Executive Secretary of UWS.
Qualification required
- Excellent knowledge of natural resources – wildlife, trees, plants, soil, water and at higher level, ecosystems; and their sustainable use and management.
- Three years field based working experience on projects whose objective was improvement of livelihoods and ecosystem health.
- Knowledge of scientific and social research methods, Geographic information systems and Monitoring and Evaluation.
- Knowledge of Data Base Management and Multivariate Data Analysis approaches.
- Knowledge on financial accounting and reports
Academic qualification
Bachelors Degree in resource management, conservation science or similar fields or a diploma with several years of field experience.
Additional training in research methods, accounting and communication.
