What is the Uganda Wildlife Society?

Founded in 1998  after several years of operating as the East African Wildlife
Society, Uganda Chapter, the Uganda Wildlife Society has been at the
forefront of active conservation in Uganda. With members from academia,
the public sector, the private sector and the general public, UWS is
committed to promoting the conservation of wildlife and environment in Uganda.

UWS Organisational structure

The Society is managed under three important structures namely;

General Assembly: this is the supreme body of the Society and consists of the entire membership of the Society. The
General Assembly determines general policies for fulfillment of the object of the Society.

Executive Committee: this is responsible for policy guidance and governance of the Society and the Secretariat in
particular. The Executive Committee is responsible to the General Assembly.

What makes UWS unique among conservation groups in Uganda?

  • UWS is one of the largest and diverse membership-based conservation groups in Uganda.
  • UWS
    is one of the leading conservation groups in Uganda engaged in
    environmental research and advocacy and successfully influences policy
    reform on a regular basis.
  • UWS provides conservation education and awareness to the general public using various tools and fora.

    is involved with community conservation initiatives by helping
    communities mobilise funds and build technical and organisational
    capacity for sustainable development
  • UWS conservation
    interests are broad – ranging from wildlife and forest conservation to
    distributional equity of natural resources revenue.

    has built strong partnerships with academia, NGOs, the public sector
    and private sector in Uganda and in the East African region.
